Al Dexter
POINDEXTER, CLARENCE ALBERT [AL DEXTER] (1902-1984). Clarence Albert Poindexter, country singer known as Al Dexter, was born in Jacksonville, Texas, in 1902. While working as a house painter, Dexter began performing in local bars and clubs. In the early 1930s he put together a band to perform in the outskirts of Longview, Texas. He signed a recording contract with American Recording Corporation in 1936. Dexter's "Honky Tonk Blues," which he wrote with James B. Paris, was the first country song to use the term honky-tonk. In the late 1930s Dexter owned a honky tonk himself, the Roundup Club in Turnertown, Texas.
Ernest Tubb
Ernest Dale Tubb (February 9, 1914–September 6, 1984), nicknamed the Texas Troubadour, was an American singer and songwriter and one of the pioneers of country music. His biggest career hit song, "Walking the Floor Over You" (1941), marked the rise of the honky tonk style of music.

It doesn’t get any better for musicians than this past week. The Fabs played our second gig inside the Air and Space Museum (reuniting with the lovely and talented Lisa Mathews), and another great Light the Night walk sponsored by the Leukemia Society. HTC played at a lovely fall festival in Haymarket and met a terrific sound guy – Paul “Soundpig” Koch.

Another type of stripped down and raw music with a variety of moods and a basic ensemble of guitar, bass, dobro or steel guitar (and later) drums became popular, especially among poor white southerners. It became known as honky tonk and had its roots in Texas. Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys personified this music which has been described as 'a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, a little bit of black and a little bit of white...just loud enough to keep you from thinking too much and to go right on ordering the whiskey.'
